Trends in rainfall indices for six Australian regions: 1910-2005

چکیده
Understanding rainfall variability, shifts and trends is of primary importance when considering the potential for biophysical, social and economic impacts. An increase in mean rainfall could enhance agricultural production and water supply. However, if this increase is associated with more extreme rainfall events, it can enhance flood frequency and intensity. Conversely, decreases in mean rainfall can lead to droughts and greater fire risk. For example, in southwest Western Australia (SWWA), a sudden and sustained 15 to 20 per cent decline in rainfall during the 1970s has resulted in a 50 per cent decline in streamAust. Met. A new approach to detection of anthropogenic temperature changes in the Australian region
A new method has been applied for detecting a human influence on regional temperature changes in Australia over the last 50 years, including the whole of Australia, the southern half of Australia and the southeastern sector of Australia. There was a strong relationship between interannual variations of rainfall and temperature in different regions in Australia. The rainfall-related component of...
متن کاملAn assessment of recent trends in Australian rainfall
Studies over the last decade into Australian rainfall have often noted the presence of long-term and shortterm trends but have rarely identified any statistically significant trends, mainly because the data are characterised by high interannual variability. The only exception is the southwest region of Western Australia (SWWA) where a relatively sudden decrease in winter season (and annual) rai...
متن کاملEvaluation of land degradation trend using satellite imagery and climatic data (Case study: Fars province)
Introduction: Climate change and human activities have a direct impact on land vegetation. Decreased rainfall and increased temperature are among the climate change factors leading to significant changes in water resources and energy balance in affected areas. On the other hand, human activities such as growing population, overgrazing and land use changes that make change in land conditions, al...

Global changes in extremes of the climatic variables that have been observed in recent decades can only be accounted anthropogenic, as well as natural changes. Factors are considered, and under enhanced greenhouse gas forcing the frequency of some of these extreme events is likely to change (IPCC, 2007 Alexander et al., 2007). Folland et al. (2001) showed that in some regions both temperature a...
متن کاملClimate Impacts and Responses
Climate variability and trends impact on Australia’s economy, environment and society. Australian research organisations are conducting many research projects to understand the magnitude of climate change (including natural variability and human induced climate change) and the physical drivers that underpin our ability to forecast and manage its impacts. Australia’s average temperature varies b...
